HYDERABAD: While rising tomato prices are a headache for consumers, it is turning out to be a boon for farmers. The latest news is that of a tomato farmer in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh. A farmer named Chandramouli has made Rs 4 crore in 45 days. He says that he sold 40000 boxes of tomatoes.
The new achievement comes in the place of a loss of one and a half crore rupees in tomato cultivation last year. Chandramouli's tomato cultivation is on 22 acres. Tomatoes were planted in April and harvested at the end of June. Farming was done using innovative systems including irrigation.
The tomatoes were sold in the Kolar market in Karnataka. A box of 15 kg tomatoes was priced between Rs 1000 and Rs 1500. 40000 boxes like this were sold in 45 days. Chandramouli says he had to spend a total of 1 crore for farming expenses and got Rs.3 crore as a profit.
