NEW DELHI: Women paraded naked in Manipur and gangraped have moved the Supreme Court. The women filed separate pleas in the court against the centre and the Manipur government. The petitioners requested the Supreme Court to take suo moto action on the case and order a fair and impartial inquiry.
Meantime, the apex court will today consider the centre’s request to transfer the case of women paraded naked to a different state. The shocking incident that happened in the first week of May came to light when the internet ban that existed in Manipur for almost two months was partially lifted.
The Supreme Court had opined that the visuals of the incident are very disturbing and showed the failure of the Constitution. While considering the case last week, Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud had asked the government to take steps to protect women in the region and inform the Supreme Court the exact progress.
The gang-rape incident that shocked and embarrassed the entire country happened a day after riots broke out between the Kuki-Methei sects in Manipur. The opposition parties had recorded strong protests and anger over the incident. The Chief Justice warned the government that if they did not intervene in the incident, the Supreme Court would intervene. So far seven people were arrested in the incident.
