THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: It is hinted that the finance department will give Rs 150 crore to Supplyco for market intervention during Onam. This is in addition to the Rs 250 crore allocated on the 29th. Although there is a plan to allocate another 250 crore rupees, the final decision will be taken only after reviewing the financial position of the government.
Food Minister GR Anil had informed Finance Minister KN Balagopal in writing yesterday that the amount allotted by the Finance Department is not enough. It was agreed to pay at least 150 crores following this. The position of the food department is that it needs one thousand crores. Out of 250 crores allocated last day, 180 crores is for paddy procurement and 70 crores is for market intervention. 4200 crore is due for Supplyco in both these cases. 1200 crore rupees is to be received as the government's share for procurement of paddy from farmers. 3000 crores to be paid by the government is for the sale of food items at subsidized rates and market intervention.
On the 30th, 'Kerala Kaumudi' had published a news article under the title 'Govt's market intervention remains daydream with Onam in horizon' pointing this out. Minister GR Anil had informed Party Secretary Kanam Rajendran that the Finance Department was neglecting them and CPI's political intervention was needed. CPI has decided to take a strong stand in the next Left Front meeting.
Hints are that the food department will take the position that Onam markets cannot be held if money is not available. 'Onachanta' was held last time in district centers, 140 constituencies and panchayats without Maveli stories.
