NEW DELHI: A special investigation panel and a high-powered committee including women judges will be assigned to study the sexual assault that happened on two women during the Manipur riots. A bench including SC chief justice D Y Chandrachud, Justices J.B. Pardiwala, and Justice Manoj Mishra took the decision while considering the petition filed by the sexual assault survivors in Manipur.
The court said the vile attack made against Kuki tribe women were not isolated incidents. SC also ensured taking necessary steps to make the people of Manipur put faith in the constitutional system of the country. SC reprimanded the delay made by police in registering FIR in the gang rape case.
Meanwhile, the victims told the court yesterday about having no faith in the CBI investigation announced in the case. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal represented the Kuki victims in SC. The victims also said it was only for the SC intervention that necessary steps are now carried out. A special investigation team headed by an IG rank officer(not from Manipur) should be appointed. There should be a proceeding to record the confidential statement before the Magistrate. The victims also asked for anonymity as they feared their names getting publicized through social media.
SC also asked Manipur and the central government to transfer vital details regarding the case as early as Tuesday. Attorney-General for India R Venkataramani and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta asked for more time but the court denied it hastily.
