THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government is in a fix fighting a crumbling economy. At present, there seems no big option in cards for loans. Meanwhile, the people had enough of the skyrocketing prices for domestic essentials. Without subsidized goods, the government is plunged into a debt swamp. Even the Supplyco promise of subsidized goods is turning into a hoax. Malayalis are eager to send off the 'Karkidaka season' to welcome the prosperous Onam, but things are out of place this year and the government’s economic system is in a serious muddle.

Kerala has already taken Rs 14500 crores in loans sanctioned by the central government. With much of the amount spent, there exists just a meager Rs 890 crores until December of this year. If the central government decides to stymie further loans or backs away from allowing any relief package, things will go real messy for the government in Kerala.

Thiruvonam comes on the 28th of this month. Salary and pension should ideally start its distribution from today. Salary for the month of September may also have to be paid in advance. The government employees are expecting the Onam bonus to reach them along with their monthly salary. They are already perturbed after the DA got stalled for a total of five terms now. Meanwhile, the government needs Rs 2880 crore to complete the three months arrear in welfare pension. At least two months' pension should reach the beneficiaries or else their onam will be in tatters. Another Rs 450 crores should be paid to farmers who procured rice for Supplyco. Last week, Rs 250 crore was transferred to Supplyco from the financial department.
