suu-kyi

NAYPYIDAW: Myanmar's former ruler and Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi (78) has been pardoned by the military regime. Suu Kyi was sentenced to 33 years in prison after being ousted by a military coup in Myanmar in 2021. Following this, she was under military detention and was recently released from jail. She was placed under house arrest after that.

Suu Kyi was pardoned for five crimes. Media reports indicate that Suu Kyi was granted clemency as part of a general amnesty given to more than 7,000 prisoners during observance of a Buddhist fast. With this, she has received a six-year reduction from her imprisonment. However, the information suggests that Suu Kyi will still have to serve 27 out of the 33 years of her imprisonment and house arrest.

The punishment came after she was found guilty in various corruption cases. Suu Kyi was also convicted on charges of manipulating the November 2020 election for her party, the National League for Democracy. However, she has denied all the charges against her.
