atulya

The tragic news of Atulya, a 20-year-old girl in Konni, who committed suicide after failing to get a loan to pursue her nursing studies, also points to the fraud that is taking place in this sector. Many people are being cheated under the guise of unrecognized nursing institutions in Karnataka. The new scam is to give admission to a recognized college and then change the college without the knowledge of the students. Atulya took admission in a nursing college with the help of Bengaluru Devamrutam Charitable Trust. The fee was given by the trust. After the trust authorities were arrested for forgery, the fees of many including Atulya were discontinued. Atulya, who was forced to pay the fees on her own, paid the first year's fees with the help of her relatives. However, when the college authorities started bothering her about the fee arrears, the girl came back home. She tried to get a bank loan to continue her studies but to no avail. It is reported that Atulya took her life because she couldn't handle the thought of discontinuing her studies.

Similar incidents have happened in Kerala before as well. Every academic year we have to hear the tragic stories of those who end their lives because they cannot pay the fees. Many girls opt for nursing studies thinking that they will get a job after completing their studies. Children from poor families look for nursing colleges in Karnataka due to the unaffordable college fees in the state. Most of the victims of the scams there are Malayali children. The government and the Nursing Council warn at the beginning of the academic year that they should seek admission only in recognized colleges. It is not difficult to know the details of recognized nursing colleges and schools in the state. Self-financing nursing colleges and their associations publish the list of recognized colleges through the website which is a boon for children but there is no sure way to know the truth about nursing colleges in Karnataka. Especially for children from ordinary families in rural areas. Every year the ploys are changed to fool the kids. The children seeking admission will be given admission to an approved nursing college at first. Later, documents will be made in secret that all of them have been transferred to unauthorized institutions. This will be done only after taking the fees. Only when the mark list is received after the first year exam will the students come to know that the course was not done in the college they were admitted to.

It is reported that there are around twenty-five nursing institutions in Bengaluru, Mangaluru and Bellary that have cheated Malayali students. Students studying in these colleges find it difficult to get education loans as banks will only grant loans to students from recognized colleges. Those who have completed their studies and are about to seek employment abroad have had the unfortunate experience of doors closing in front of them on the recognition issue. The government should come forward to help Malayalee children from falling into the trap of fake nursing colleges. It would be very helpful to prepare a list of recognized nursing institutions in neighboring states and post them on the website. The Nursing Council can also help children with this matter. Governments have a huge responsibility to control the Shylocks who thrive under the guise of nursing colleges.
