Broad retired in the last Test of the Ashes series. England won the match to level the series 2–2, but the Aussies retained their Ashes title as previous series champions.

England took the consolation of the match but gave up the Ashes

In the first innings, the Aussies scored 295 runs against England, who were all out for 283 runs. Then in the second innings, England scored 395 runs at a fast pace, the turning point. With this, the Aussie's target became 384 runs. The Aussies started chasing on the morning of the fourth day, but the rain stopped them. It rained after lunch on the fifth day when the Aussies were about to chase and win. Then England got back into the game by taking quick wickets.

The Aussies resumed batting on 135 for no loss on the final day and were 238/3 at lunch. It started raining after lunch. On the fourth day, rain resumed even after lunch.

Yesterday, openers David Warner (60), Usman Khawaja (72) and one-down Marnus Labuschagne (13) got out early, but Steven Smith (54) and Travis Head (43) combined for the fourth wicket to take the Aussies forward. It rained when they reached the point where 146 more runs were needed to win.

In the morning, Chris Woakes dealt the first blow to the Aussies by putting Warner in the hands of Bairstow. Warner and Khawaja added 140 runs in the opening stand. Woakes also sent Khwaja back on 141. Labuschagne was sent back on 169 by Mark Wood. Then Smith and Head stepped up. Ben Stokes had a chance to dismiss Smith with a catch just before lunch but dropped the catch in an attempt to gloat.

The game changed when the rain came back after lunch. Moeen Ali got England back into the match by dismissing Travis Head.Woakes dismissed Mitchell Starc (0) and Ali dismissed Cummins (9) to take the Aussies to 294/8. Then in the final Test, Stuart Broad ended the resistance of Todd Murphy (18) and Alex Carey (28) to bring the curtain down on this Ashes series and his career.
