TANUR: A man arrested in a drug case in Tanur died in police custody. The deceased has been identified as Tamir Jifry (29), a native of Chemmad and a resident of Mampuram Moozhikal. A case of unnatural death has been registered in the incident.
The Tanur police and the special investigation team of the district police chief took Tamir into custody from near the Deodhar Bridge along with four people in connection with drug trafficking on Monday morning. The police say that they were caught with 18 grams of MDMA and later Tamir collapsed at the station. He was brought dead to a private hospital in Tanur Moolakkal around 4.30 am. Tanur police has prepared an inquest. There are some scars below his knee. It is reported that there are no visible injuries on any other part of the body.
There are currently four cases against the deceased Tamir. Malappuram district police chief S Sujithdas said that a case of unnatural death has been registered and the narcotics cell DySP will investigate. The Special Branch has tasked the DySP to check whether there has been any lapse on the part of the police.
Tamir had been working at a mattress shop in Chelari for a year. He lived in a room near the shop. Relatives alleged that the death was mysterious. He is single. Father: Mullakoy Thangal. Mother: Sharifa Beevi. Siblings: Firoz (Dubai), Haris and Jubairia Beevi. After post-mortem at Manjeri Medical College, the body was handed over to the relatives.
The hospital authorities did not allow the Youth League workers who came to the hospital to see the dead body, resulting in commotion and protests. A large police force including top officials is camping at the place.
