BERN: The remains of a German mountaineer who went missing decades ago in the Swiss Alps have been discovered. On July 12th, these remains were found by fellow mountaineers who had journeyed to the Theodul Glacier in Zermatt. The retrieved remains were then sent to the Forensic Medicine Unit at Valais Hospital in Sion.

It has been confirmed that these are the remains of a 38-year-old mountaineer who vanished from the mountain in 1986. Authorities also reported that a case was filed in September 1986 when he failed to return after his mountain ascent. However, the police have not disclosed the climber's identity, only releasing images of the remains.

Accidents are frequent in this area, primarily due to summer glacier melting. Many incidents have been documented in this regard. Notably, the wreckage of a plane that crashed in 1968 was recovered from the Aletsch Mountains last year. In 2015, DNA testing confirmed the identities of two young Japanese mountaineers who had gone missing in 1970 during an avalanche on the Matterhorn. Similarly, the body of British mountaineer Jonathan Cornville, who disappeared on the Matterhorn in 2014, was later located and retrieved.
