THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The prototype of the indigenously developed Lithium Titanate (LTO) battery, which is poised to revolutionize the field of electric vehicle manufacturing was presented at an event in Thiruvananthapuram today. Dr S Unnikrishnan Nair, the Director of VSSC handed it over to Minister P Rajeev. The EV Development and Manufacturing Consortium, the leading agency for formulating e-vehicle policy in the state has spearheaded the local development of LTO.

VSSC, Travancore Titanium Products Limited (TTPL), C-DAC Thiruvananthapuram and Trivandrum Engineering Science and Technology Research Park are partners in the consortium. TTPL provided the 10 kg LTO electrode material required for the battery and VSSC developed the lithium titanate battery prototype.

With improved energy density, faster charging and higher safety standards, the battery will pave the way for the availability of green energy fuel in the future. Minister P Rajeev termed the moment when the LTO battery was handed over to the state government as historic. The Minister expressed his satisfaction that a consortium of public sector organizations developed the battery using indigenous materials.

The electric vehicle sector is one of the 22 priority areas identified by the state government with the goal of transforming Kerala into an industrial state. The Minister expressed hope that Kerala's mineral resources, which are rich in elements such as monazite, thorium and ilmenite, have not been sufficiently utilized industrially and this kind of discovery will also lead to that. Dr Unnikrishnan Nair stated that the newly developed battery is safe and environmentally friendly.
