PALAKKAD: Bhartiamma filed a complaint with the Chief Minister and the Human Rights Commission against the police's mistake of arresting her by fault. There is a demand for departmental action against the erring policemen.

In 2019, the police arrested 84-year-old Bhartiamma, a native of Kunissery, in a case against Bharti, a domestic worker from Puthussery filed in 1998. Bhartiamma fought a four-year legal battle to prove that she was not guilty.

Bhartiamma was acquitted when the complainant informed the court that she was not the real accused during the witness examination. Bhartiamma, whose husband died years ago, is living alone. Even after repeatedly saying she was not the accused, the police did not believe her. Bhartiamma stated that she was humiliated and this is why she is filing a complaint at this age when she should lead a peaceful life.

One day the police came to the house and said that they were arresting me. When I asked what it was for, they said it was for a dispute. Even though she said she did not know anything, the police did not listen to her and arrested her. Bhartiamma's only prayer is that this fate should not happen to anyone again. At the same time, the police are standing firm on the explanation that the mistake occurred because there are many houses at the same address.
