NEW DELHI: The central government has successfully passed a bill in the Lok Sabha to regulate services in Delhi. The bill was approved by the Lok Sabha after a day of intense debate. Following this, the opposition Members of Parliament left the House.
The bill was introduced to replace an ordinance that was enacted to overturn a Supreme Court ruling in favor of the Delhi government. This ruling was related to the control of government officials in Delhi. Home Minister Amit Shah staunchly defended the bill. If the Bill is also passed by the Rajya Sabha and receives the President's approval, it will become a law, thereby replacing the existing ordinance.
"There are constitutional provisions that empower the Central government to enact laws for Delhi," Shah stated while discussing the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023. Arvind Kejriwal had expressed his opposition to this bill through a tweet before its passage. He stated that it was a bill that could potentially curtail the rights of the people of Delhi.
