NEW DELHI: The mass burial of 35 Kuki people killed in the riots in Manipur was postponed for a week following the intervention of the Manipur High Court and the central government. The burial was to be held yesterday. The consensual effort led by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the High Court's order to maintain the status quo at the burial site forced the Kuki people to postpone the burial. The bodies of 35 Kuki people, including three women, are at Churachandpur District Hospital.

Meanwhile, clashes took place after the Meitei people moved to the burial place. 17 people were injured. Additional forces have been deployed in the conflict districts of Churachandpur and Bishnupur. Curfew relaxation has been withdrawn in Imphal. The attackers looted weapons of Manipur Rifles in Imphal city and more than 300 guns and ammunition from India Reserve Battalion in Bishnupur. A group of women clashed with the forces in Kangvai and Phougakchao areas.

The Kuki-Zomi organization gave in during a consensus effort led by Amit Shah from Wednesday midnight to 4 am yesterday. The Kuki people sought five assurances from the Centre. The Manipur High Court Acting Chief Justice MV Muralidharan and Justice A Guneshwar Sharma intervened by holding an extraordinary sitting at five in the morning yesterday. The court directed the central and Manipur governments and parties including Meiteis and Kukis to try for consensus. The court also directed Manipur Chief Secretary and DGP to inform their stand. The court will consider the matter again on the 9th.
