WASHINGTON: An American company that brews beer using sewage has garnered attention. Epic Clean Tech, a California-based water recycling firm has introduced this concept. The sewage employed in the beer-making process was gathered from a 40-story building named Fifteen Fifty in San Francisco.
Water from showers on various floors of the building, wastewater from sinks and water from washing machines are utilized for this purpose. They craft a Kolsch-style beer from these unconventional water sources. The company elucidates that on a global scale, approximately 14 percent of wastewater is wasted through various means and this endeavour aims to address that issue. Epic Clean Tech achieved this feat in collaboration with another American company, Devil's Canyon Brewing.
The company produces beer by meticulously filtering and disinfecting the wastewater from the building. Although such beers are not permissible in San Francisco, Epic Clean Tech's beer was included among those served at the Greenbuild conference in California. Aaron Tartakowski, the CEO of Epic Clean Tech, stated that the beer was concocted using 7,570 litres of water and was part of an awareness campaign. He further added that the company recycles up to 94,635,290 litres of water annually for beer production.
