KOLENCHERRY: With two weeks left for Onam, the prices of banana chips are soaring. There is a possibility that the price will increase even more during Onam. The price of chips increased due to a rise in the price of bananas.
In a single week, the price hike was up to Rs. 150. Merchants say that the price will rise further.
The problem is that the price of the banana has gone up by Rs 20 all at once. There is no local bananas available, and there is also a shortage of cotton in the markets.
The price of bananas reached the rate of Rs 5055 per kg in one week. Merchants are hoping that there will be a big push in the market with the government employees and workers getting bonuses. Apart from bakeries, banana chips is also made and sold in rural areas and small-scale businesses.
Shortage of bananas from other states
As in the past, bananas have not come from Tamil Nadu. The farmers of the state, who planted their crops in the hope of getting them ripe for Onam, were hit by heavy rains. Many banana plantations were uprooted in the rainfallsS in two phases.
