NEW DELHI: The central government has imposed a 28% tax on bets on online games. The new measure will come into effect from October 1. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman clarified that although Delhi and Goa have asked for a review of the decision, it will be implemented. The minister added that necessary amendments should be made to tax bets on online games. The decision was taken in the last cabinet meeting.

Nirmala Sitharaman said that while Delhi Finance Minister Kailash Gahlot opposed the new amendment, Goa and Sikkim supported it. But the minister added that other states including Karnataka, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh want the decision to be implemented. She added that the new tax will come into effect from October 1 if all the states are in favour and the tax will be reviewed after six months.
