NEW DELHI: Even though the Supreme Court stayed the sentence against Rahul Gandhi, the steps to restore Rahul's MP position are deliberately being delayed says Congress. Congress had started steps to remove Rahul Gandhi's disqualification after the court issued a stay on the imposition of the maximum sentence in the criminal defamation case. However, Congress Lok Sabha leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury claims that the Lok Sabha Secretariat and the Speaker are delaying the proceedings.
When a meeting with the Speaker was attempted, it was instructed to approach the Secretary General. When the Secretary General was contacted over the phone according to this, it was told that the office was on holiday and that the letter should be given to the Speaker. Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury accused the under-secretary of receiving the letter but only signing it without stamping the seal on it. He alleged that there was collusion going on to prevent Rahul Gandhi from reaching the Parliament.
The move is to bring Rahul Gandhi back to the post of MP to strengthen the Congress during the session of Parliament itself. The Supreme Court's stay of the two-year imprisonment of Rahul on the Modi remark has become a very crucial decision for Rahul Gandhi and Congress. This paved the way for Rahul to participate in campaigns as a people's representative before the Lok Sabha elections.
Even though the United Opposition (India) was formed to counter BJP, the disqualification was a hindrance for Rahul Gandhi to speak for the main opposition party that is Congress. The political energy that Rahul Gandhi, who is returning after overcoming his disqualification legally, brings to Congress and opposition numbers inside the Parliament is huge. It is under such situations that the Congress has come forward alleging that efforts are being made to delay Rahul's return.
