THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Former PSC chairman MK Zakir may become the new chairman of the State Waqf Board in the wake of TK Hamza's resignation. The government has nominated Zakir as a new member to the board to replace Hamza who has also vacated the board membership. After the issuance of the order in this regard, the board will hold a meeting and elect the new chairman.
Six members of the ten-member waqf board are pro-government, so Zakir will not have any difficulty getting elected to the chairmanship. The government had to cancel the move to leave Waqf Board appointments to the PSC due to opposition from Muslim organizations. In this situation, it was the government's interest that an experienced person should become the new chairman, and things were brought to Zakir, who has worked as PSC chairman. A native of Perumbadappu in Malappuram district, Zakir has been a lawyer in civil, criminal and labour sections in various courts including the High Court. He became a PSC member in 2011 and became the chairman in 2017.
The other members of the board are PV Abdul Wahab MP, P Ubaidullah MLA, M Naushad MLA CPM, MC Mayin Haji and PV Zainuddin as Mutawalli representatives, KM Abdul Rahim, Razia Ibrahim and VM Rahna as government nominees.
