CHENNAI: BJP State president K Annamalai said that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin does not know English and Hindi. Annamalai's jibe came on the heels of Stalin's criticism of Union Home Minister Amit Shah's statement about adopting Hindi language across the country. The BJP leader said that Stalin, who did not know Hindi and English, did not understand what Amit Shah said.

Amit Shah's remark that Hindi language should be accepted without objection started the controversy. Amit Shah said that Hindi is not a competitor of other regional languages, but as the languages become stronger, the country will also become stronger. The Union Minister's statement was made while addressing the Committee on Official Languages in the Parliament.

However, Stalin criticized Amit Shah's suggestion that Hindi should be accepted without objection by pointing to the anti-Hindi imposition agitation of 1965. Stalin also said that Tamil Nadu will strongly defend if there is an attempt by the central government to impose Hindi. The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister had warned that the situation of the 1965 anti-Hindi agitation should not be repeated due to such a senseless action. He added that Karnataka and West Bengal are states that are defending the Centre's Hindi language policy.
