NEW DELHI: Both central and state governments are taking measures to save their face as DGP Rajeev Singh is scheduled to appear today to answer questions from the Supreme Court, which has criticized what it called a complete breakdown of governance in Manipur.
Center has deployed ten companies of the Central Army. This is in addition to the existing 40,000 soldiers. Five policemen, including the station-in-charge of Nongpok Sekmai station in Thoubal district, have been suspended in connection with the mob stripping of Kuki girls.
The IG announced a high-level inquiry into the looting of more than 300 guns and 19,000 rounds of ammunition from the headquarters of the Second India Reserve Battalion in Bishnupur on August 3. The inquiry will be completed within six weeks. These matters will be reported to the Supreme Court today.
Meanwhile, six more people, including a father and son, were killed in the violence within 24 hours. Sixteen people were injured. 15 houses were burnt and the forces were fired upon. The conflict is on the Churachandpur border. Meanwhile, the curfew has been relaxed by seven hours in Imphal West.

Kuki MLAs unable to attend Manipur assembly session starting August 21 due to fear for their lives. Members including the ones from BJP are scared. There are 10 Kuki MLAs in the 60-member House. Seven BJP members, two Kuki People's Alliance leaders and one independent. The Kuki People's Alliance withdrew its support to the Biren Singh government yesterday.
