LONDON: A new variant of COVID-19, EG 5.1 a novel Omicron derivative is spreading rapidly across the UK causing concerns among healthcare workers. The recently identified variant, named Eris has been flagged by the UK's Health Security Agency originating from the highly transmissible Omicron lineage.
This variant was initially detected in the country on July 3rd. Following thorough observations, it was officially classified as a variant by the 31st of July. The UK Health Security Agency has made revelation that one in seven confirmed COVID-19 cases in the country are now attributed to the Eris variant.
Symptoms observed in individuals infected with Eris include a runny nose, sore throat, headache, fatigue and sneezing. There has been a slight increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in Britain. People of all age groups are being admitted to hospitals with a notable emphasis on the vulnerability of the elderly population.
World Health Organization head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has warned that countries of the world should pay attention to the Eris variant, although there is a possibility of safety in those who have been infected with the disease and those who have received the vaccine.
