THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The ninth session of the 15th Legislative Assembly begins today. This session is scheduled to last for 12 days. The House will adjourn today after offering funeral rites for the former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and former Minister Vakkam Purushothaman. Today marks the first assembly session in 53 years without the presence of Oommen Chandy. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Speaker A N Shamseer, Leader of the Opposition V D Satheesan and various party leaders will pay their respects.
This session is unique in that it occurs amidst various political controversies that are raging in Kerala society. There are indications that the opposition will put the government on the defensive by raising various issues in the House, such as the myth controversy involving the speaker himself, the ongoing incidents of violence in the state, the microphone dispute, the severe financial crisis in the state and the continuous accidents in Muthalapozhi.
It is also being observed whether Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will address the various controversies discussed in the state within the House. Additionally, it is important to determine whether the previous practice of allowing the media to record the question and answer sessions before Covid will be reinstated this time.
The seating arrangement will be adjusted including the seats of Oommen Chandy, which was previously positioned at the forefront of the opposition. There are 19 bills on the main agenda for this session.
