KAVARATHI: The central government has invited public comments on the Lakshadweep Excise Regulation draft bill which aims to permit the sale of liquor throughout Lakshadweep, an area where liquor is currently prohibited. The directive, issued by Additional District Collector Dr R Girishankar, specifies that comments must be submitted within a 30-day period.
The draft bill outlines comprehensive regulations including provisions for the appointment of an excise commissioner, establishment of an excise department, guidelines for manufacturing, storage and sale of liquor, as well as penalties for the sale of adulterated liquor. Currently, alcohol is restricted and only served to tourists arriving at the tourist center located nine miles away from Agathi, an uninhabited area. There was an unsuccessful attempt to extend liquor sales to resorts in Kavarathi, Minikoi and Kadamam due to public opposition.
Should the Bill be enacted, the existing Liquor Prohibition Act of 1979 will be revoked. Lakshadweep MP Muhammad Faisal has expressed concern that the draft bill could disrupt the peaceful life on the island and has pledged strong opposition against its implementation.
