NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has appointed a three-member committee to look into rehabilitation and relief work in Manipur. The committee is chaired by Justice Geeta Mittal. Justices Shalini Joshi and Malayali Asha Menon are the other members of the committee. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud said that apart from investigations, rehabilitation and relief work will also come under the purview of the committee.
After forming the committee, the Chief Justice said that the effort is to restore confidence in the rule of law. Former IPS officer Dattatray Padsalgikar will oversee the CBI probe, the court said. The investigation team will consist of five officers. There will be 42 Special Investigation teams to investigate the cases not handed over to the CBI. These teams will be supervised by DIG rank officers from outside Manipur. The court also informed that each officer will be in charge of six special investigation teams.
Manipur DGP Rajeev Singh appeared before the Supreme Court to file a report on the communal violence in Manipur and the steps taken by the administration so far. Attorney General R Venkataramani told the court that the government is handling the Manipur issue very maturely.
