The untimely demise of director and screenwriter Siddique is an indescribable loss to the film world. Not only the filmmakers but also the audience who burst out laughing at the films bearing the signature of the genius, heard the news of his death with shock. The all-time super hit collaboration of Malayalam cinema, Siddique-Lal team's films created a wave at the box office that no one else could match. They never disappointed the audience who came to the theaters looking at the cinema as a means of entertainment. Even after the breakup of that directorial partnership, Siddique continued to prove his excellence with incredible films. Apart from Malayalam, he not only made a mark in Tamil, Bollywood and Telugu but also broke collection records.
Siddique also started his career in the entertainment industry by performing Mimicry through the Cochin Kala Bhavan. Siddique has said that the life experiences of that time when he was waiting for opportunities are what made him a screenwriter and director. He entered the film industry as an assistant to the famous director Fazil.
Siddique and Lal approached Fazil with the story of Nadodikkattu and Pappan Priyappetta Pappan. However, when Fazil said that the stories did not suit his style, they approached Sathyan Anthikkad. Sathyan directed both of them. They wrote the screenplay along with the story for Pappan Priyappetta Pappan. Nadodikkattu which turned out a super hit was scripted by actor Srinivasan.
Ramji Rao Speaking (1989), the film that still makes us laugh, was Siddique-Lal's first directorial venture. The movie became a mega hit and became a trendsetter in the history of Malayalam cinema. Ramji Rao Speaking conquered Kerala with moments that had the smell of life mixed with tears and scenes that make one laugh even when they think about it. With that film, which gave a new flair to the comedy instead of banal jokes, the duo never had to look back. In Harihar Nagar and Godfather which came next, created a sensation in the theatres. The fact that the playwright NN Pillai was cast in the lead role in the film Godfather is a good example of the directorial skills of both of them.
After the films Vietnam Colony and Kabooliwala, the partnership broke up and Lal focused more on acting, while Siddique made a comeback with the film Hitler. Friends, Chronic Bachelor, Bodyguard and Bhaskar the Rascal were all films directed by Siddique which were huge hits. Siddique's fame spread all over India after Bodyguard, which was made in Malayalam with Dileep playing the lead, was remade in Tamil as Kavalan with Vijay as the lead and in Hindi as Bodyguard with Salman Khan. Bodyguard was a superhit in all languages. Later, Siddique wrote the story, screenplay and dialogues for King Liar, directed by Lal. The last film directed by Siddique was Big Brother. He also produced two films.
The epithet of a filmy gentleman suited Siddique well. The sudden illness took away a talent who was supposed to create a lot of great movies. This loss is priceless. Tributes to that filmmaker's soul.
