MUNNAR: Mahabali frog, which comes out from underground only once in 365 days, was found in Munnar's Anakulam, Mankulam. These endangered frogs live in the warm regions of the Western Ghats.

Their scientific name is Nasikabatrachus sahyadrensis. They are also known as Mahabali Frogs because they come out only once a year. They stay underground for 364 days and come out only one day a year to lay eggs. They live in disturbed soil near rivers and streams and feed on earthworms, termites, ants and small insects. As per the recommendation of the forest department steps are underway to declare the Mahabali frog as the official frog of the state.

This frog has short legs and is dark in colour. Their bodies are about seven centimetres long and look like they are inflated. They are also known as pig snouts because of their pointed noses. Short legs and arms with thick muscles help the frog to dig in the soil. Due to its short hind legs, it cannot jump from one place to another like other frogs.
