THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The opposition on Wednesday staged a walkout from the Legislative Assembly, alleging that even the ruling party MLAs are not safe in the state and that the police approach is lackadaisical.
Leader of the Opposition VD Satheesan said that the police did not investigate the death threat against NCP MLA Thomas K Thomas and that another murder attempt was made against the MLA. However, the Chief Minister replied that along with the investigation, the police had taken steps to provide security to the MLA and that the MLA's complaint was not against the police.
M Vincent, who moved the adjournment motion notice, alleged that the police were ready to file a case only after the MLA came before the media with the complaint that attempts had been made in the last 2 years to kill him.
"As per the complaint of Thomas K Thomas MLA, there was a conspiracy led by the party leader to kill him by drowning his car while he will be traveling from Thiruvananthapuram to Kuttanad. Minister AK Saseendran said that MLA's allegation is an immature approach and this is an instruction to the police regarding which direction the investigation should go," Vincent said.
The Chief Minister replied that the complaint that a person named Reji Cherian tried to endanger the MLA by influencing the driver of Thomas K Thomas was forwarded to SP Alappuzha for investigation. Strong action will be taken against whoever commits a mistake, he said.
VD Satheesan asked whether the Chief Minister would justify a minister's claim that the complaint was false while the investigation was going on. "The police did not act on the allegation that former MLA George M Thomas influenced the police by taking money to change the accused in the POCSO case and the girl's allegation against the DYFI leader in Thrissur. The police have been following the practice of filing cases against those who are against the ruling party and ignoring complaints against party members," Satheesan said.
With this, CPM members got up from their seats and started shouting. They did not go back to their seats even after being asked to do so by the Speaker.
