Harsheena endured the worst by carrying unknowingly a surgical scissor inside her stomach, not for days but for grueling five years. There are enough reasons to establish that the crime happened at Kozhikode medical college where Harsheena was admitted for a third delivery operation. However, the medical staffs and the doctors at Kozhikode medical college are in no mood to accept the flub. Harsheena has been in protest for months. She even denied financial compensation from the government until the culprits are brought to justice. In an appalling incident, Harsheena and her husband were dragged by police when the two protested in front of the Kozhikode DMO office on Wednesday.
The poor housewife is currently suffering what is to be called pure condescending brutishness from the health ministry. She is not a murderer or a convict. The housewife suffered for years only for the lackadaisical work that happened from doctors and medical staff from Kozhikode medical college. Yet, the blame falls upon her, and Harsheena gets treated like a rag on the streets by the same police that is working as per certain orders from higher-ups.
If there happened any prudent action from the health minister, Harsheena could have saved any protest in front of the DMO office. The health minister might have thought of the odd way out to end the protest from prolonging. 'As justice gets delayed, Harsheena too might feel the drudgery in continuing and will eventually drop the case'; This thought might have given the impetus for the government to not jump to any easy conclusion. Albeit coping up with the worst case of humiliation, Harsheena is showing cojones to carry forward the fight for justice.
The medical board has submitted a report on the incident of scissors left in a woman's stomach after surgery. The report said that it was not possible to prove when and where the device was left and it was not certain that the scissors were from Kozhikode Medical College. The majority of attendees at yesterday's meeting of the medical board felt that the police report should be entirely disregarded.
Meanwhile, two members have disagreed with the report of the medical board. Medical College ACP Sudarshanan and Prosecutor Jayadeep are reported to have disagreed. The police found that there were no metals in Harshina's body before the third surgery. But the radiologist says that it cannot be taken at face value.
The police investigation into the case happened only for the apprehension shown by the earlier appointed expert committee to arrive at a conclusion. Expert doctors were also included in the team formed by police and a detailed report was submitted to the government. The report had vital detail that moreover confirmed that the scissor was from Kozhikode medical college. However, the health ministry showed reluctance in accepting the report but assigned another medical board to investigate the case.
Harsheena went on strike at the DMO office in a situation where the medical board rejected the police's investigation report. By taking statements again and going for re-investigation, it is palpable how the case is traversing. The health ministry wants a total reverse in the findings and is waiting for that perfect report from the newly formed medical board.
Cases of negligence in treatment have appeared thousand times before in the country. In all those previous dreadful incidents, the doctors accepted their mistake, and the victim was offered proper compensation. Those cases went in such a way that no big protest got reported anywhere. However, Harsheena’s case is different. She was often the compensation first and the doctors were still not ready to admit their mistake. The attempt was to subdue the case under the might of money. There is an eagerness to save someone, but Harsheena hasn't yet succumbed to the government pressure.
