MINNESOTA: Acidity is a condition that many individuals experience nowadays. This condition, known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) entails the challenge that arises when the stomach's acid flows into the oesophagus. People often resort to various medications for relief and occasional use does provide solace. However, there are some crucial considerations for individuals dealing with this condition who are on regular medication.

A study published in the medical journal Neurology highlights certain facts. According to the article, individuals who used proton pump inhibitors for more than four years faced a 33 percent higher risk of developing dementia.

Several PPI medications including omeprazole, esomeprazole and lansoprazole fall under this category. However, these components were not detected in the prevalent medicines available in the market for such ailments. Proton pump inhibitors function by targeting stomach enzymes effectively addressing the issue of stomach acid.

Proton pump inhibitors effectively manage acid reflux. Nevertheless, research has demonstrated that their prolonged usage can lead to paralysis, fractures and severe kidney problems. Kamakshi Lakshminarayan from the Minnesota School of Public Health elaborates on this.

She asserts that there is no dementia risk associated with short-term use of such drugs. However, in cases of prolonged usage the likelihood of memory impairment rises.

The study involved 5712 participants divided into four groups over a span of five and a half years. All participants were aged 45 or older. During this duration around 10 percent which is 585 individuals fell ill. The researchers, however, emphasize that the study found no direct correlation between acidity and dementia; its treatment remains a minor contributing factor.

To prevent acidity, it is advisable to take prescribed medications and follow appropriate meal timings. It's crucial to avoid foods known to trigger acidity.
