NEW DELHI: "Peace will soon prevail in Manipur. The country is with them," Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced in Parliament.
Modi was responding to the debate on the no-confidence motion moved by the opposition alliance 'INDIA' on the Manipur issue, stirring up the Lok Sabha.
The motion of no confidence was defeated by a voice vote in the absence of the opposition which walked out during the Prime Minister's speech. The Parliament dispersed after suspending Leader of the Opposition Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary for alleged breach of discipline in the House.
Modi, who attacked the Congress and Rahul Gandhi throughout his two-hour speech, dragged on without mentioning the issue of Manipur. With this, the opposition started chanting slogans of 'Manipur...Manipur...'.
Modi spoke about Manipur only after the opposition left the House. However, he did not mention the communal riots or controversies there. The Prime Minister said that the current problems started following an order of the Manipur High Court. He also blamed the Congress for the entire unrest in the Northeast.
"The Congress mishandled terrorism in Manipur. It encouraged the separatists without understanding the sentiments of the North East. It tried to divide the North East through the politics of appeasement. Gandhiji's picture was not even placed in the government offices. Together we will find a solution to the Manipur problem. Manipur will soon become the center of development," Modi said.
