KANNUR: Lorry driver attempts suicide in front of a police station after being fined. The incident took place in front of Peringome police station today evening. During the vehicle inspection, the Peringome police imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on the lorry driver, a native of Aravanchal Mudalaipatti. He tried to commit suicide later by pouring petrol on his body.
Police fined the driver of the lorry who was transporting laterite stones. It is reported that a fine of Rs 15,000 was collected from him last week. When the officials asked the lorry to be taken to the police station premises, the driver stopped the vehicle on the roadside. After informing that he did not have money to pay the fine, he handed over the keys of the vehicle to the officials. The dramatic events unfolded when he reached the station with petrol from the nearby pump afterwards.
The lorry driver, who tried to set himself on fire after pouring petrol on his body, was finally persuaded by the police. After stopping the suicide attempt, the officers took him to the back of the station. The driver was given the vehicle and released after the petrol on his body was washed off.
