MALAPPURAM: Murder charge has been filed in the case of the death of the man who was taken into police custody in a drug case in Tanur. No one has been charged yet. The case was handed over to the CBI after it was alleged that Tamir Geoffrey died due to custodial torture. A charge of murder was filed in the case later. Earlier the case was registered for unnatural death.

Crime Branch was the agency that investigated the incident earlier. According to the postmortem report, Tamir Geoffrey was beaten in custody. Following that, about eight policemen were suspended. Out of the total 21 injuries, there were injuries on the hips, feet, ankles, etc. It is also said that a blunt weapon was used. Two packets of chemical drugs were found in the stomach. One of these was broken. The drug reached the body because of this. Getting beaten after this caused the death, says the postmortem report.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister signed the file handing over the case to the CBI last day. Tamir's family also wanted an agency outside the police to investigate the incident. The family welcomed the transfer of the probe to the CBI.
