THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Motor Vehicle Department has moved to buy drone cameras at a cost of Rs 400 crore to detect traffic laws violations. The department has requested new drones with AI technology. According to MVD’s project report submitted to the transport department, each drone will cost Rs 2 crore, and a total of 200 drones are under contention to be purchased.
The goal is the fly those new drones to areas where the normal AI camera is restricted access. The earlier 726 AI cameras installed at a cost of Rs 232.25 crore is already smoldering in corruption. It is under this circumstance that the government is audaciously trying luck with another set of deals.
The main recommendation of the project report is to invite tenders and find an agency to implement the project. The earlier implementation of AI camera projects also took a similar route and jumped into the swamp of corruption. The opposition then raised alarm bells accusing corruption charges even against close relatives of CM Pinarayi Vijayan.
Even before the AI camera project, the motor vehicle department had given a report to the government about the need for drone cameras. The old report suggested buying normal drones, and now, the request has been revised and instead of normal drones, the department wants AI drones. Similarly, the police were also pondering plans to buy the same AI drones to catch criminals.
Although this camera is used to detect excessive speed of vehicles, it can also detect all kinds of violations. An AI 4G Robotic Drone Camera (AI 4G Robotic Drone) can be purchased for Rs 1.55 lakhs. The opposition is sure to allege corruption if the deal turns to fruition.
