THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The meteorologists said there is no chance of getting rain in Kerala for the next two months. The state has received 44 percent less rain since June till yesterday. By the end of this month, the reduction is likely to be 60 %. Instead of getting 155.6 cm of rain, received only 87.7 cm till yesterday. According to meteorologists, August received the highest rainfall in previous years.
Even though it is mid-August, got only ten percent of the expected rain. We don’t usually get much rain in September. This is unlikely to change this time either. The figures show that the state may face a severe drought this year than 2016.
We usually receive 201.86 cm of rainfall from June to September. During this period last year, 173.6 cm of rain was received. Experts said there is no chance of getting that much rain this time. Meteorologist K Rajeevan of the State Disaster Management Department has warned that if this continues, the state will face severe drought in the state in the coming months.
El Nino formed in the Pacific Ocean, lack of formation of significant low pressures and lack of monsoon rains on the coast are considered as the reasons for the decrease in rainfall. Meantime, MetBeat Weather, a consortium of meteorologists, has predicted that Kerala will receive more than normal rainfall in September.
