NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has banned certain words that are regularly used in society from the court language. The handbook issued by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud prohibits the use of about 40 words. Various words mean prostitute. Words like housewife and slut are forbidden.

"The words have been used to refer to women in earlier court judgments. Such words are inappropriate. It is not the purpose of this book to question or criticize these judgments. It's underlining that gendered words exist.' The Chief Justice said after releasing the handbook.

Explaining how stereotyped words can affect judicial decision-making, the Chief Justice said, 'Like any other person, a judge relies on stereotypes. Relying on preconceived notions about people, groups or groups when a judge makes a judgment or decision in a case can do great harm.' He also clarified. Many words related to women have been replaced in the new handbook.
