trains-

As the safest mode of travel, trains have a prime position among people. However, there have been some major accidents lately that have shaken this belief. It is a fact that the railway facility in the state is still underdeveloped. Maximum number of trains are running using the existing facilities. There is a constant clamour for new trains but the demand is not met due to lack of facilities. On top of that, there are organized misdeeds by some to create fear among the people. The recent incidents of stone pelting on coaches in northern districts cannot be ignored as an isolated incident. It is understood that these anti-social acts have taken an organized nature. In a year and a half, about 20 trains were pelted with stones. Many trains including Vandebharat were pelted. There is also an incident of glass doors on trains getting broken.

It should be assumed that children's mischiefs are not the reason behind these incidents. That is why the Railway Protection Force is carrying out extensive investigations in the area of the stations which include the areas where the attack took place. Stones were pelted at trains in Kannur and Nileswaram area three days ago. The window glass of the train was broken. Passengers also get minor injuries. It is natural for the passengers to panic in the unexpected stone pelting. Travellers are scared every moment they pass through these parts as they are not sure when and where the stone pelt will come from.

Most of the railway lines in Kerala pass through residential areas. Therefore, train travel here is the safest, regardless of day or night. It is suspected that antisocial forces have a role behind the continuous stone pelting. Therefore, these people should be identified and punished accordingly. Who can say that those who do not hesitate to throw stones at a train now, will not venture into more dangerous acts tomorrow? It is not possible to guard the whole of the railway lines which stretch from one end of the state to the other. Therefore, people's cooperation is also needed to find the attackers. Anomalous movements can be detected by residents on both sides of the tracks. If the anti-socials see that the people are also monitoring, they will certainly retreat. There used to be a practice of clearing the bushes on both sides of the railway tracks. Now wild grass and plants are growing wild in many places. It is a good place to hide and throw stones. It is high time that the interest shown in rail safety should also be shown in the areas through which the rail passes. Strong monitoring and testing is also required.
