KOLLAM: Fog was felt in various parts of the Kollam district, including the coastal region, last morning giving hints of heavy summer. It is unusual to see fog during the month of Karkidaka. In the past, heavy rains were usually experienced at this time. Experts believe that the presence of fog is a sign of the upcoming hot summer.
Heat increased and rain decreased
The entire district is experiencing intense heat this time. It was 35 degree Celsius in Punalur yesterday. Unlike other districts, the rainfall in the Kollam district was very less this year. Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha and other nearby districts experienced heavy rainfall while Kollam experienced relatively less rainfall. Meteorologists say that rain can be expected after August 20.
Farmers in trouble
Farmers are in a position where they have to draw water for their crops even after Karkidaka. The lack of rainfall during this time, which is also the harvest season for Onam, will affect crops including vegetables and tubers. The water level of the Thenmala Parapar dam, which is the main source of water in the district, has also reduced significantly. This may affect the water supply through Kallada Irrigation and other drinking water projects.
