KOCHI: The government has informed the High Court that it will consider appointing a senior lawyer as a special prosecutor in the Attapadi Madhu murder case if recommended by Madhu's mother. This information was provided in a petition filed by Amma Malli, who requested the appointment of a special prosecutor in the case.

Currently, Additional Director General of Prosecutions, Gracias Kuriakos is representing the prosecution. The hearing for the petition was then adjourned to August 21. The case is being heard by the bench led by Justice Dr Kausar Edappagam. The appeals filed by the accused including the first accused Hussain against the sentence handed down by the trial court in the case have also been postponed to August 21.

The case pertains to Madhu, a tribal youth who was fatally beaten on February 22, 2018 on accusations of theft in Attapadi. The trial court sentenced 13 accused individuals in the case to seven years of imprisonment. There is an appeal filed by the accused and additionally a separate appeal has been filed by the government alleging that the sentence was reduced in the High Court.
