KANNUR: African swine fever was confirmed in Kannur's Kanichar panchayat. The district collector has ordered the mass culling of all the pigs in two pig farms. Swine fever was confirmed in the pig farm of PC Jins of Malayambadi in Kanichar during an inspection conducted by the district animal welfare officer. All the pigs on this farm and the farm of Mile James Alakathadam, within a radius of 10 km, should be slaughtered and the carcasses disposed of according to norms.
An area of one kilometre around the pig farm where the disease has been confirmed has been declared as an infected area and a radius of 10 km as a surveillance zone. The distribution of pork in these areas, the operation of supply shops and the transportation of pigs to other areas of the district and the bringing of pigs from other areas to the surveillance zone have been banned for three months.
