NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has issued a stern warning against those who misuse social media. A bench comprising Justices BR Gavai and PK Mishra said that those who make derogatory posts are liable to face criminal proceedings and suffer the consequences. It also said that a mere apology is not enough to escape action.
In 2018, former Tamil Nadu MLA and actor SV Sekhar had posted a defamatory Facebook post against women journalists. The court clarified its stand by rejecting Sekhar's plea to quash the case related to it. The court also directed Sekhar to face the trial. The court said that users of social media should be careful about its influence and should read their posts carefully before sharing them.
