THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: New police officers will receive training in developing polite behaviour as a result of the harsh criticism leveled at police for their behavior toward the public. A module on 'behavioral change' has been included in the training syllabus for 1769 civil police officer recruits in eight battalions.
It is the first time that the police will be trained to behave politely towards the public. New SIs will also undergo training. Theory classes will be conducted by experts.
The police officers will be taught to behave with dignity and compassion. They will also undergo training on how to deal with the public, women complainants, the elderly, and those who come to the station. They will also be given training in ensuring gender equality and respectful treatment of transgenders. Recruits will also be taught that they will be kicked out of the police force if they do not behave politely.
Out of 1769 new civil police officers, 222 are engineering graduates. There are 42 MBA degree holders, 209 postgraduates, and 878 graduates. They will undergo training for 9 months.
According to Section-29(1) of the Police Act, police officers must show courtesy, propriety, and appropriate empathy and use polite and respectful language in their interactions with the public.
As per Section-86(1)(c), one cannot continue as a police officer if he is mentally, physically or behaviorally unfit to perform the duties of police. Section-86(3) provides for the dismissal and compulsory retirement of those convicted of offenses including violence and immorality.
