SYDNEY: Amidst all odds of turmoil and division existing in the national team, Spain wrote history by defeating England(2-1) in the Women’s World Cup for the first time. It was the first time that Spain’s women’s team entered into a World Cup finals but toppled England’s expectation to emerge as the finest in Women’s football.
Olga Carmona scored the fine strike from the far end of the 18-yard box in the 29th minute to seal victory for La Roja. England meanwhile provided a big bulwark for Spain but got subdued in the meticulous cross-passing and possession-controlled game exhibited by Spain. In the 68th minute, Spain even won a penalty but was blocked by England's goalkeeper instilling serious hope of a comeback for the Three Lions. But the game never faltered a bit from Spain as the team stood on top until the blowing of the final whistle, making them the second team in history to win both the men’s and women’s FIFA World Cup.
