The reorganization of the Congress working committee gives hope about Congress emerging out of the 'long unchanged leadership bubble' in Highcommand. The working committee has been reshuffled to include many contrarian voices including Shashi Tharoor, who contested against Mallikarjun Kharge for the post of AICC president, and Sachin Pilot, who is pitted against Chief Minister Gehlot in Rajasthan. In any party, staunch critics will be shown the door and it is the unsaid norm, but Congress is thinking otherwise and is more pragmatic in its approach to include those names in the highest committee of the party. This change was warranted for the party to remain unified and show its might in the approaching 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
In the 39-member committee, A.K. Antony, Organization General Secretary K.C. Venugopal, and Shashi Tharoor were included. The 32-member permanent invitee list had big names such as Kodikunnil Suresh and Ramesh Chennithala, albeit with Ramesh irked over the neglect.
Half of the members of the committee are women, youth, and Dalit representatives. Tharoor was called to fill the void left by Oommen Chandy. This itself proves contrary to the media's purported stance of the rift in Kerala congress over Tharoor's inclusion, Tharoor enjoys favorable support from A- group workers in Kerala and it is no secret. Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, and former party presidents Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi are permanent members of the committee.
Priyanka Gandhi retained her place on the committee. Youth leaders Kanhaiya Kumar, General Secretary in charge of Kerala Tariq Anwar, Gaurav Gogoi, and former Chief Minister of Punjab Charanjit Singh are new members of the committee.
If the current reshuffling leaves behind any hint, it tells nothing other than the wind of change in Congress and chiefly about the party dropping its archaic ways of stifling voices but giving them big responsibility to trudge ahead. Sashi Tharoor's inclusion is a testimony that indicates the welcome change in the party. Apart from Tharoor, Anand Sharma and Mukul Wasnik of the G23 group, which earlier raised the flag of revolt against the Congress leadership, are in the working committee.
A K Antony was included majorly for his unfettered loyalty towards the Gandhi family. It indicates that many crucial decisions in the next Lok Sabha elections will see the light only if Antony gives consent. The high command also places Antony in high respect for his yeoman work over the years and his undying spirit to see success again with Congress. The high command will look upon the 2024 performance in Kerala and will decide about major reshuffling plans in leadership. Many believe the change in Congress to surely bear fruit in the next elections.
