THRISSUR: Rev. Fr. Roy Joseph Vadakkan who serves as the Vicar at Arimbur Kappalpally is known for his unique approach to worshiping Christ through music. He employs an 'Edaykka,' an instrument traditionally used in Hindu temples to lead the worship songs. Father Roy received his training at the Paangaav Shivakshetra and even composed hymns himself. Under the guidance of Guru Peringodu Manikandan, he has dedicated two years to perfecting his skills.
In the public church services, the 'Edaykka' is sometimes accompanied by other instruments. The congregation cherishes the hymns of Christ that Father Roy and his team perform during these services.
Apart from his musical contributions, Father Roy (45) holds the position of Assistant Director and professor in Management Science at Cheruthuruthi Jyoti Engineering College. He gained attention in 2019 for showcasing his talent with the 'chenda,' another traditional musical instrument during the college's Onam celebrations. Interestingly, he learned to play the 'chenda' by watching YouTube tutorials.
Father Roy, the master of various arts, is the son of the Ittup-Margili couple from Enamaavu, Chavakkad. He also serves as a guest lecturer in management at seven colleges. His notable achievement includes the establishment of 300 bamboo groves within the Jyoti college premises. His fascination with fairs dates back to his childhood. He pursued learning the thabala and band. Moreover, he holds the position of a Basketball National Referee and has been associated with the Thrissur Basketball Association as its Patron and Past President.
'He used to bang on the desk during his studies. Art is meant to bring happiness to man. There are no boundaries.'
