NEW DELHI: The Ministry of External Affairs has not confirmed the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping during the 15th BRICS Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Johannesburg this morning. He will leave for Greece on the 25th.
When asked if Modi and Xi will meet, Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra said that South Africa, the host country has invited leaders of many countries and the schedule of bilateral meetings with them has not been decided.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister needs to meet Xi to invite him to the G20 Summit in September. Before coming to India for the G20 Summit it is indicated that both the countries will cooperate with each other to ease the border tensions. Following the commander-level discussions, the major-level discussions are progressing at two places on the border. The two last met during a dinner hosted by President Joko Widodo at the G20 Summit in Bali, Indonesia in November of last year.
Apart from the member countries like India, China, South Africa, Brazil and Russia, the countries who are special invitees will also participate in the summit.
