KOCHI: With the arrival of the Onam season, flowers are in high demand in the state. There are many people who buy flowers to wear it on their heads during Onam celebrations and lay Athappookkalam. However, there are people who take advantage of this and cheat the customers. Police have recently registered a case against six flower vendors for selling jasmine flowers by measuring the quantity of flowers using their arms.
According to the police, the vendors were booked on the ground that the measurement will not be uniform as the length of each person's arm is different. Each vendor was also slapped with a fine of Rs 2000. The law requires that jasmine flowers should be sold after measuring it using a weighing balance or a scale of a certain length. Action has also been taken against those who sold flowers using an unsealed weighing balance.
During the Onam season, legal metrology officers rarely inspect the flower shops on the streets. According to officials, recent inspections revealed that many traders are taking advantage of this and cheating customers on quantity and weight.
