THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Tense situations took place in front of Pettah police station in the early night hours of Tuesday. DYFI workers staged a protest and tried barging forcibly into the police station creating havoc and traffic disruption in the area. It all started when a police officer stopped a DYFI worker riding a scooter without headgear, and questioned it. A heated exchange took place between the two which ended up as the DYFI worker accused the policeman of manhandling him.
Vanchiyur DYFI Block Secretary M Nitish was stopped by police officers during the vehicle inspection at Pulayanarkotta. A fine was also levied for not following proper traffic rules. Meanwhile, Nitish used this time to reveal his political clout as he informed the police officer about his DYFI lineage. However, according to DYFI leaders, the police officers responded back with expletives. The DYFI workers in retaliation reached Pettah police station to question the atrocity. However, they alleged getting beaten up by some police officers.
Later, more DYFI workers and CPM leaders organized and reached the station. Meanwhile, the protesting activists were accused of being pushed by some police officers which erupted into another melee. It is reported that the leaders filed a complaint against the police action. CPM District Secretary V Joy also reached the station and took part in the protest. After that, the DCP also reached the station as per the demand of the leaders. While the discussions were undergoing inside, the workers again tried to barge inside the station.
