AIZAWL: A major mishap struck Mizoram as an under-construction railway bridge collapsed killing 17 people on Wednesday. According to local media, many people are feared trapped inside the debris and the death count is expected to rise in the coming hours. The incident took place in Sairang area, almost 21 kilometers away from the capital Aizawl.
The incident happened around 11 30 am in the morning. More than 40 workers were at the location during the mishap. As of now, 17 dead bodies have been recovered. The police along with rescue workers are engaged in arduous work clearing the rubble from the bridge.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed anguish over the incident. A compensation of Rs 2 lakh was announced for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured.
