CHENNAI: Assistant Professor of Madras Medical College committed suicide by draining blood from his body using a drip. The incident happened in Alwarpet near Chennai. Dr. U Karthi (42), an expert in surgical gastroenterology, is the one who committed suicide. Karthi joined the Rajiv Gandhi Government Medical College as an assistant professor six months ago. He lived alone in an apartment owned by a relative. He worked in a government hospital in Chengalpet during the Covid-19 pandemic. In the meantime, he was infected with Covid three times.

Karthi is the son of Ulakanathan, a doctor in Puducherry, and Kasthuri, and his sister Deepa is a doctor in the US. Karthi had even refused to get married so that he could give more importance to work. He used to talk to his sister Deepa on the phone every day. After not being able to reach him on the phone for two consecutive days, Deepa informed her father Ulakanathan in Puducherry. The father also kept calling the phone but there was no response from the other end. Then, as per Deepa's instructions, her friend Dr. Srividya went to the house where Karthi was staying and found the door open. Srividya said that there was a strong foul smell inside the house. Karthi was lying dead on the chair, bleeding out and rotting.

Teynampet police reached the spot after Srividya informed them and shifted the body to the hospital. Karthi committed suicide by inserting drips in both hands. Police said that it is possible that the death took place on August 19. A suicide note reading ''My life ended very well. No one is responsible for my death was also found nearby. Police registered a case of unnatural death and started an investigation.
